Know Him
Over the last few days, the SMDN social media pages has been focusing on the concept of rehashing your day in the presence of Jesus. Rehash seems an unusual word and simply means to add things to a conversation while you are talking about something else. Or at least that is what it meant when I was trying to earn a living off of cold call sales as a younger man.
So often God’s children spend substantial amounts of time doing Christian things like going to church, watching Christian movies or listening to gospel music while we are driving in our car. All the peripheral things that fill our day are actually important because they fill the bulk of our time and thinking space.
As much as these peripheral things have value and add to our Christian walk and meditations there is something that is by far more important than anything else we can do in our daily lives. That is to invest dedicated and calculated time to separate ourselves from the world and sit at the feet of our Lord and Master Jesus.
In John 17v3 “And this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent—Jesus the Messiah.” Jesus uses the word know when He refers to His and the Fathers relationship with us as His children. The interesting thing is that in Matt 7v23 “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who practice evil!’“” the word knew is from the same base word as know from before. For us to best understand the value of the word know we need to look at Gen 4v1 “ And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.”
This word know speaks of a deeply intimate relationship that can be equated with a marriage relationship. So often we get sidetracked by the challenges and detours that we have to go through in our daily lives that those moments of intimacy with the Father are completely lost and replaced with the peripheral gospel music or Christian movie. So often we reach the end of our day and before bedtime, it is our custom to take our Bible and read a few verses before we slumber off to some light gospel music playing in the background.
I am not knocking bedtime Bible reading or even gospel music in the day of a child of God. In fact, I strongly support that we load our day with these activities. The challenge that children of God face is when we get lulled into believing that time spent listening to gospel music is enough to sustain our relationship with the Lord.
I consider myself to be someone that works hard as maintaining good communication between my wife so I took a scroll through a normal day in my WhatsApp history to see how often we messaged back and forth. I guess I wanted to see what the figure was in my day that would be considered as a normal amount of messaging. When I looked at various days in my chat history with my wife it gave me a perspective on what was normal for us as a couple.
If I was to use my conversations with my wife as a measuring stick of investment for sound or a hight priority relationship it means that I have some work to be done in my walk with the Lord. I am reminded of the words of Mr Smith Wigglesworth that said:” I don’t often spend more than half an hour in prayer at one time, but I never go more than a half an hour without praying”
Perhaps the majority of our lives have stepped off the mainstream purpose for our lives that the Lord had intended. Even so, there is always room for us to improve our spiritual growth in the Lord. There is always room for us to grow in His grace. This afternoon I spoke with my wife about her perspective on our efforts to constantly work at our relationship with the Lord.
Hebrews 11v6 “Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him.”
Paul understood this essential truth of spiritual maturity and spent his life promoting intimate personal relationships with Jesus everywhere he went. Jesus prayed for us to make this dream of an intimate walk with the Father a reality. The Father called the Son to hang on a cross to make this relationship possible.
Surely only the foolish will not see and make the most of the opportunity that the Father placed in our future through sending His Son to set us free and seal the deal with the Holy Spirit to show us the way. Can I urge you to make a brand new effort to change your spiritual direction and reach out to our heavenly Father and seriously connect with Him so that He may pour a new fresh wave of His glory into your heart to make you shine?
