Abortion

The debate about pro-live VS pro-choice has been raging for a really long time. Strangely though there is very little solid reasoning that I have seen that supports any one of these conceptual ideas, so I decided to look into the topic of abortion for myself.

On the face of it, almost everyone has an opinion on whether abortion, although legal in many places all over the world is something we should endorse, allow, appose or outright condemn.

Let me start by saying that every person will need to make that choice for themself if or when they face that crossroad in their life. No one is able to make a choice for you and ultimately no none should be allowed to expect you to live your life by their standards.

For the average person the choice between Pro-life or pro-choice is deeply seated in the foundations of their personal belief system. If they have a liberal mindset the choice may be an easy pro-choice one. In contrast a person with a substantially more conservative mindset the pro-life choice is almost a given. The important thing for me to clear up here is that a choice of such gravity is made by the person who if most directly touched by it. This means that as Bible-believing, Jesus worshiping people we need to grasp where we stand in his regard, should it be one that is relevant to someone we know. For a start we should not condemn or judge anyone that makes a choice for themself, especially if the outcome of that choice does not directly impact our lives. How can anyone relate to someone willing to commit suicide and accept their willingness to end themself as a viable solution to the challenges they face.

We are strongly advised NOT to pass judgement on any one (Matt 7v1-4), and in the interest of our own well being, its really important to understand that every one of us will need to give an account of our own choices made, and actions taken in our lives before the Lord at the appointed time.

If you find yourself in the position where you need to make this very personal choice or need to gain a biblical perspective on it, then this blog post is likely the guidance you have been looking for.

As Christians we should be striving to understand what the Bible says about something so that we can align ourselves to the guidelines set out therein. At the forefront we should explore the context in which God intended for a new life to be created before we are able to evaluate the impact of unusual circumstances on the decision that is to be made.

Procreation is a mechanism created by God to establish a delegation of his Kingship on this earth through a maintained presence of mankind on earth, ideally inside the framework of a monogamous marriage (Mal 2v15). Having said that I must acknowledge that the likely hood of a termination of pregnancy being considered by a loving married couple is substantially lower than in the life of a single mom or pregnancy from involuntary intercourse and consequent pregnancy conception.

The focus point in the heated debate about abortion hinges on the perceived starting point of life for a fetus. The three major milestones in any pregnancy are, conception, heartbeat and first breath. There are supporters for all three as well as some other milestone points in a fetus development. The question still remains: ” At what time can a fetus be considered alive?

Where does this life come from and where does the spirit of a person come from? The easy answer is from God. I have seen and experienced so many encounters with God’s hand at work that I have come to accept that He more often than not uses natural processes to achieve many of the miracles we see around us.

The secret to the chain of life can be found throughout scripture but it is particularly well illustrated in Exodus 20 5. For the sake of clarity one needs to scratch deeper than the surface of the text. Although there are many translations of the Bible the one that in this instance brings one closest to the original meaning of the verse is likely the King James Version. It says that we inherit our sins from our fathers as opposed to our parents as some other translations suggest.

This interesting fact is supported by other places where the Word says we are born into a sinful nature and why Jesus, having been divinely conceived, was sinless and able to pay the price for our sin in his death. There are also medical facts that highlight this biblical concept.

An article published by Carl Engelking in Discover Magazine leans strongly on the finding that we inherit the majority of our genetic properties from our fathers. I find it inspirational when science underscores what scripture already said.

This information helps us understand that our life essence comes from our fathers and as such indicates that a fertilized egg is alive. There is still one aspect I feel we need to touch on one more concern, and this is in-utter development of a fetus from a single cell to full person.

There is a mountain of information available on the Net when it comes to fetal development. I would like to visit God’s part in that process. In the simplest of ways the Psalmist states that God is intimately and personally involved in the development process of every person (Luke 12v7) as well as a fetus (Ps 139v13). This means that the manner that we care for, or dispose of our unborn babies impacts directly on work that God is actively busy doing inside the uterus.

In my mind the conclusion in the debate for Pro-life vs pro-choice is an easy one to make taking into account my personal circumstances. That’s really what it comes down to. For you the choice may be infinitely more complex. It’s easy for anyone to prescribe a way they want us to think. How does anyone fully understand the mindset and challenges faced by another person?

Our first relationship is meant to be with the Father. In the absence of that there is very limited hope for anybody.
